From the coauthor of Chris Kyle’s #1 New York Times bestseller, American Sniper: In direct defiance of the president’s orders, Navy Master Chief Gil Shannon, one of America’s most lethal SEAL snipers, launches a bold mission comprised of SEAL Team Six and Delta Force fighters to free a captured female helicopter pilot being held by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

The president is afraid a botched rescue could jeopardize US foreign policy as well as end his presidency. But once the special ops community learns that one of their own—the first female helicopter pilot of the Army’s elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR)—is being held and brutally mistreated, there is no executive order strong enough to stop them from attempting to rescue her.

This fast-paced, action-packed thriller with incredibly realistic and blistering battles introduces a new American hero, Gil Shannon, whose iron will and expertise with the .308 Remington Modular sniper rifle will spell the difference between freedom and an ignoble death for America’s female POW.

From Publishers Weekly
McEwen, coauthor of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle's bestselling memoir, American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, proves he also can write meaty thrillers with this intense debut. Inspired by actual Black Ops missions and stacked with a large cast of admirable and shady characters, the book opens with the terrifying kidnapping of Warrant Officer Sandra Brux by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. While captive, she is brutally beaten, raped, videotaped and held for a $25 million ransom. After a series of bungled rescue attempts, it's up to Master Chief Gil Shannon, who boldly defies orders from a confused and panicked U.S. president by leading SEAL Team Six and Delta Force fighters on an insanely dangerous mission to extract Brux from enemy hands. McEwen and Koloniar convincingly capture the friction between soldiers, intelligence officers, and politicians while making timely references to the National Security Agency and women in combat. Snappy dialogue and well-timed humor offset an abundance of acronyms and technical weapons references. The brutal torture scenes and gory combat descriptions require a strong stomach, but for an unfiltered portrayal of modern warfare backed by complex yet compelling storytelling, this one hits the target.

Navy Seal Action
By plane
Scott McEwen is not nor ever was a Navy Seal, but his novel introducing Gil Shannon is probably as realistic as any book describing their exploits can be. He does support various military charitable organizations including the Seal Team foundation, and in a preface to the book implies that he has talked to many active Seals about their exploits. A botched mission in Afghanistan sees a female helicopter pilot captured by the Taliban who decide to use her to discredit the U.S. She is raped by the leader of the group holding her with the rape being captured on camera and exposed on the internet. When the video is viewed by the U.S. president,he becomes fearful of his next election being compromised by a botched rescue mission, and prohibits any attempt to rescue her. The next move by her Taliban captors is to demand a ransom of $24 million dollars for her return. The sum is exorbitant but the president in order to maintain his standing with the electorate at first decides to pay it. When his advisers go against paying it because it may cause more kidnapping and monetary demands, the president than orders a massive attack on the town that the woman is being held in.
Gil Shannon understands that should such an attack be launched the Taliban will surely kill their captive and unilaterally decides to try a rescue attempt, first on his own, and than with the aid of two of his Seal buddies. An Afghan working for the Americans volunteers to go into the town the pilot is being held in and mark the house that she is being held in.
The ensuring action and events are described in a manner that surely would have happened with coordination between the Seals and a volunteer air group in the raid and rescue of the woman. The combat scenes are as real as possible, and the dangers faced by Gil and his buddies very well described. The actual rescue and retrieval are a high mark in the action and show a great deal of knowledge on McEwen's part of something that is very intricate and involves an incredible amount of coordination.
It is not possible to imagine that Gil Shannon will not appear again in other books by McEwen and it is sure that his readers will look forward to them.

One Way to a thrilling read!
By b mcb
Reflections: Ten years ago, a U.S. Army soldier named Jessica was captured in Iraq when her convoy was ambushed. She was rescued by a Special Ops team. Two years ago, a humanitarian aid worker also named Jessica was kidnapped by Somali pirates and held for 93 days. She was rescued by SEAL Team Six.

Sniper Elite: One Way Trip is a fictional book about Gil Shannon, one of the most lethal SEAL snipers ever. Gil lives in Montana with his wife when he is not on a military mission. However, he considers his true home to be the Navy. The book opens on Gil's hunting of a bull elk and the calculations in his brain while looking through the rifle scope. We learn through his flashback about his first kill.

In the meantime, a female Black Hawk pilot Sandra Brux is captured in Afghanistan. The scenes of what her captors do to her are difficult to read.

The military code is:
Leave No Man Behind.
It also should be
Leave No Woman Behind.

However, the President of the U.S. orders that Brux not be rescued. Say what?! Gil and the others in the special ops community plan to defy this order. Our hearts race with adrenalin when we learn about another One Way Trip. Gil talks to Brux's husband. He calls his wife --- this phone call is a tear-jerker. No spoilers here about the rescue attempt. At the very last page, a cold chill ran down my spine.

Sniper Elite
By Roslyn Abell
In this thriller Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan capture an American helicopter pilot. The pilot, Warrant officer Sandra Brux, is well known because she has transported dozens of soldiers in and out in the UH-60M Black Hawk she commands.

In defiance of the President's orders Navy Master chief Gil Shannon, organizers a rescue operation comprised of Seal Team Six and Delta Force fighters to free the kidnapped pilot.

Sniper Elite is one of the best military themed books I have ever read. Mr. McEwen transports his knowledge of Seal characters and missions into a gripping, fast paced page-turner. The reader is taken into the real world of military operations. He reveals the brutal violence of the bad guys and the political games leaders play with lives of those willing to defend this country. I liked the fact he mixed in the political reactions because today we are bombarded with politicians mixing into an area of fighting they have no knowledge of.

The characters are depicted in full three-dimensional tones. Although the language used is harsh it comes with their job, as does the brutal violence. This book takes the reader off into a world that not even the media can display.
