Understanding human impacts

Have you ever imagined how the world and those you knew would have turned out if you never existed? Now apply that for the whole human race. How would Earth have turned out if all the homo sapiens just up and vanished in one instant. This work of environmentalism explores how various environments on Earth have been changed by mankind, and what would happen if people disappear. Each chapter in this book explores one particular environment, and man's impact on it. One chapter looks at the presence of plastic garbage in the world's oceans. Another chapter looks at the footprint of nuclear plants, the amount of human interaction needed to keep them running, and what would happen if the workers just left. Still another chapter examines the role of people in changing the extant and makeup of old growth forests. Overall, the book covers a very diverse set of topics, incorporating multiple branches of science such as petroleum geology, microbiology, climatology, nuclear physics and so on. The book is also quite diverse in looking at a broad span of human cultures, from those long past, such as the advanced, pyramid-building tribes of Mesoamerica, to more recent developments such as modern corporate farms. The author's tone is calm and objective, often reflecting on how changes wrought by man sometimes dwarf those done by nature, while are other times outdone by those of nature; such as floods and ice ages. Overall, a very interesting and enjoyable book.

Not a recap of the TV show

Quit different from the TV series. This book focuses mostly on the environmental consequences of our civilization if it were to vanish overnight.
The author uses examples of abandoned areas on earth now, such as the exclusion zone around Chernobyl and the DMZ on Cyprus to try and show what our planet used to look like before civilization came along.
He sites the work of researchers all over the world documenting the accumulation of waste and garbage that already clogs our oceans and beaches, such as the great Pacific gyre, and attempts to give an idea of how long it will take mother nature to clean up after us.
He also talks about the 400+ nuclear power plants and waste storage sites all over the world and gives an estimate of how long it would take to decay below lethal levels.
This is not light reading and the book assumes the reader has some basic scientific knowledge, but the style and prose are reader friendly.
Recommended for anyone with an environmental bent or those who just want to know what we might leave behind us.

Great Read ... Intricate Detail

This book was in delivered in mint condition and is a very interesting read. Enclosed in the book was a thank you note as well, it was a thoughtful afterthought from the seller. If you want to know how nature would reclaim their territory after we are long gone in extreme scientific and environmental detail...buy now! You won't regret it.
