The Anti-Heroine

Okay so, I read Taking Shots and loved it. I was so excited for Trying to Score! I read the description and was really interested in reading Fallon and Lucas's story. I just finished it last night and honestly...I could barely get past 50%. I loved Lucas and Aiden and their relationship was so cute. Unfortunately, Fallon is one of the worst heroines I have ever read about. She is angry, bitter and selfish throughout the entire book! I totally get why she was mad and hurt, she deserves to be...at first. But I'm sorry, you need a better reason for keeping your son away from his father for 7 years than just "he cheated on me", especially when during your relationship he talks about how much he wants to be there for his kids and doesn't want them to ever have to know what it's like not to have a father. She keeps saying that he supposedly loved her and still hurt her so she was "protecting" Aiden, but that's crap because there is a big difference between romantic love and the love between a parent and child. Throughout the entire book, her sister and friends are telling her she's being stubborn and selfish and she even agrees and thinks to herself about how wrong her decisions are, yet she doesn't change! She continues to be mean and angry until the bitter end, refusing to forgive Lucas when he had gone above and beyond to earn forgiveness. About half way through I literally yelled out "let it go already!". I did not enjoy reading about a selfish, bitter woman with trust issues for 600 pages. I was rooting for Lucas to finally realize what a horrible person she is and move on. I want my $3.99 back.

Disappointing.

I wish I could say I fell in love with this book, but I can't. I read the first book, Taking Shots, in the Assassin's series, and I really enjoyed it so when I saw this follow-up in the series, I was so excited to read more about it. Trying to Score started out promising and had my attention. Unfortunately, by the time I reached the 30% marker on my Kindle Fire, I lost complete interest. First off, I'm not one to let improper grammar or spelling bother me while reading a book particularly if it is a self-publishing author, but this book was really confusing and threw me off quite a bit. For example, improper pronoun usage were found throughout the book numerous times that I had to re-read certain sections to make sure I understood the story. Also, there were times some sections of a chapter was written from Fallon's point-of-view, but then jump right into Lucas' point-of-view without a breaker to denote the change in tone between characters. Again, I don't allow grammar and spelling to bother me nor sway how I rate a book, but it happened so many times, it distracted me from really enjoying the book itself.
The following reasons are why I rated this a two-out-of-five:
The author creates a likable premise, but I felt it lacked character development and growth particularly the main role. The main protagonist, Fallon, was not likable whatsoever. I know I'm not always going to like the heroine, but if you read this, you'll see how horrible Fallon's character can be towards the hero, Lucas. I understand that Fallon was completely heart-broken, hurt, and scarred by Lucas, but it seemed most of her character traits consisted of being annoyingly bitter, selfish, and unforgiving OVER AND OVER. It was like a broken record and never-ending, and the author definitely does not let you forget how hurt and torn Fallon seemed to be. For a 618-page book, 3/4 of it contained the same harbored feelings which really tired me. I felt like I already knew Fallon's hurt, but Aleo didn't create more of her character except that Fallon didn't think she could trust Lucas again despite the fact that he kept trying and trying even after he discovered Aiden and did his best to show Fallon that he could be a wonderful Dad to Aiden. Fallon also said so many horrible things to Lucas, but what really bothered me the most was how border-line psycho she got with the whole Audrey situation. Fallon used this situation to make herself the victim again, and quite frankly, I had hoped Lucas wouldn't give her another chance. You can only prove yourself worthy to someone so many times, but if he or she is not willing to forgive or even try (like Fallon), you just move on.
Aleo did a wonderful job bringing out Aiden, Audrey, and Lucas's characters. You will easily fall in love with Aiden, because he has a fantastic personality. I felt Fallon's relationship with Aiden and Audrey was portrayed well, but her relationship with Lucas and her parents could have been better developed with more substance. By the end of the book, you really don't see Fallon's character has grown much. We know WHY Fallon was hurt by Lucas' actions from the past, but we don't particularly get to see her character grow until Aiden convinced her to be a better person which is described in a few pages. Her moment of epiphany is described in a few pages instead of a chapter or more, which frustrated me, because a majority of the book delved too much on the past and her pain. SEVEN YEARS people! Also, we are unsure of how her strained relationship with her parents came to be besides the fact that Fallon got pregnant at a young age. We only know that she wanted to be the best daughter possible, but we don't really know why her Dad is so hard on her. Plus, the book leaves Fallon and William's (her Dad) last encounter open-ended. Another issue was Lucas and Levi's friendship. We saw glimpses of Levi, but I suppose we will see more of him in Aleo's 3rd installment of the series with Audrey.
Overall, I didn't enjoy this book simply, because the tone of the story itself was so redundant--Fallon is hurt, Fallon wants to jump Lucas's bones, Fallon mistreats Lucas, Lucas showers Fallon with gifts, Lucas wants to jump Fallon's bones, Fallon hates Lucas, Fallon loves Lucas, Lucas does more nice things, Fallon gets mad at Lucas again, etc, etc. By the end of the book, I felt like I wasted my time reading something that could've been told in 200-300 pages instead of 600. I really hope the 3rd book is better, but I won't let this book deter me from reading more of Aleo's works.

I got stiffed

I read the 1st book of this series and decided to give the second a try. I think I got the proof read version of the first book.
How about this gem? What a waste! Absolutely no proof reading. None whatsoever. I am not out looking for errors; I can honestly say I am very tolerant since I am looking to get away and get involved into a story. Fantasy, right? I understand that writers have deadlines and self published writers need to be out there fast, but this is just too difficult to ignore. It distracts from the story and makes the characters bipolar. First she says "am not", a few sentences later she says: "ain't". I could go on and on, but it's just too depressing to do so. I even came across a word that was stricken through and probably marked for deletion!
The characters: A successful executive in charge of PR for a wine company used terms like "ain't", "gonna", "wanna", cusses in front of important clients, etc. Seriously? She is supposed to be smart, ambitious, a public relations executive representing a family business, she has put the winery on the map again... and she comes across as... I am not sure what she comes across as. Confused. I won't even address Lucas' character. Don't get him at all. Papier maché all the way. Man collage. The story line is thin, stretched.
It is very rare that I do not finish a book, even the bad ones. This one did me in.
Sorry, not impressed and peeved at the writer. Writers should respect readers who actually want to read what you create. Take the extra time to re-read, look for cohesion, consistency in character traits. Proof read. Do something!
