I'll start by saying I've researched the time period this novel covers extensively, including reading contemporary accounts of the reign of Justinian, for my own novel based around the same period. While on one hand the book shows a substantial amount of research and attention to detail there's also some other details that just seem out of place and it was enough to make me stop at the end of Chapter 7.
The single biggest problem was the depiction of Theodora as virginal and, by extension, Procopius as a pervert. Nearly every contemporary account of Theodora describes her as a notoriously lewd actress and prostitute. In the Orthodox tradition she's up there with Mary of Egypt as an example of a prostitute turned saint. The idea that she wasn't, and her infamy was a lie expounded by one man, simply flies in the face of research.
That detail was enough to sour me on it, but the single "Didn't do her research" detail that made me stop reading was mentioning Theodora feeling humiliated like being bound in stocks and having tomatoes thrown at her. The tomato is a New World fruit and wouldn't even be known in Europe for nearly another thousand years, maybe even longer until it was a common food.
