Great primer on estimation principles

I bought this book on recommendation from a co-worker as we began a complex estimation phase for over 90 detailed sub-project entities as part of a master project delivery. The book helped me understand the reasons for a lot of my past failings in project estimation and improve my accuracy and level of detail on the work we are now executing (for about the first time in my life my project is ON timeline!). Estimation is obviously only the first step in the project delivery food chain, but if you start off without enough budget and detail to do the work then you have limited ability to course-correct later. I especially found the section on 'negotiating' estimates with business executives to be helpful -- this is where I've always waffled and ended up shooting myself in the foot with past projects by not having thought through the negotiation process. Overall a great primer on estimation, plenty of references/bibliography for more detail. A few sections felt repetitive, but not distractingly so. Definitely a recommended read for anyone planning software development projects.

There are not many books on software estimation. This should certainly be one of the classics, as it pulls together a lot of estimation methods from the classical books on estimation written over time. This book provides a lot of tools which are able to be used directly without clouding the text with theory which is hard to implement.

Review: Terminus

What would you sacrifice for someone else? Throughout mankind's history, there have been those individuals willing to give up everything in their lives for their fellow man. In Terminus, by Joshua Graham, he tackles that question through the character of Nikolai. Nikolai is basically a grim reaper. His job is collect the souls of the dearly departed. But when he has to collect the soul of a young girl, and see the broken spirit of her mother, he decides he no longer wants to continue as a Reaper. He takes on a job for another division and is given three simple tasks. However, as he becomes involved in the lives of the 3 people involved, he finds the tasks harder and harder to accomplish.

Mr. Graham has taken stories of old and given them a new spin. The fallen (or disgraced) hero who must decide between his job and what he feels is right. The reader can feel Nikolai's emotional turmoil as he finds himself struggling between the two goals.
The characters are richly developed and while the reader at first sees each storyline evolve separately, they eventually reach a point where they are all integrated into one major plotline. The situations are real, or at least as real as you can get when writing about fallen Angels in the modern world, but they are real to this world. You get to watch the characters grow and change as they are exposed to the possibilities for their lives. And you get to see how each of them would answer the question.
I would recommend this book for any fan of paranormal fantasy. While there are some religious undertones, Mr. Graham is never the type to beat one over the head with proselytizing. For an age group I'd say ages mid teen to adults due mainly to subject matter and some of the storylines. It seems that Mr. Graham left the door open for more stories within this world, and I for one look forward to it with eager anticipation.

Terminus - latest hit by Joshua Graham

Terminus is another "can't put down" book by Joshua Graham. It is the story of the divine meeting humanity, pain, love , forgiveness and sacrifice.

Nikolai, or Nick, is an Angel that is a multi-layered character. His history of being an Angel hasn't been stellar and his current job is basically that of a "grim reaper". His job is to collect the souls of the newly departed. He finds it boring and lackluster. We see a change in Nick when he has to collect the soul of a very young girl. It isn't "fair".

The pain and suffering that the mother, Hope, is experiencing touches Nick to the depth of his being. he is so moved by Hope that he begins to fall in love with her... a total violation of angel rules.

Joshua does a wonderful job of presenting the Angels exhibiting human characters. Nick is not only facing the challenge of his love for Hope but also the odd behavior of his co-worker and boss. Who said that some angels couldn't be a little demonic?

Nick is willing to sacrifice all for the love of Hope.

While Terminus is about Angels and humans, it is not preachy. The characters are believable - struggles, good vs. evil, guilt, loss, love and forgiveness. I am hopeful that there will be a sequel to Terminus by this gifted author, Joshua Graham.

Mind-stretching

This is my second Joshua Graham book to read. His writing style is raw and compelling. Terminus had me scratching my head, wondering where he got some of his concepts. Though he reveals a twist toward the end that helps explain part of his thought process, he still leaves many Biblical questions unanswered. This book is hard to put down, but I strongly recommend that you don't exchange it for serious Bible study of the topics it introduces.

About the Author
Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A recipient of the College Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging in size from 15 to nearly 500 students. During the course of more than two decades as a college instructor, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, Virginia Commonwealth University, in addition to the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Feldman, who initiated the Minority Mentoring Program at the University of Massachusetts, also has served as a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and Senior Online Teaching Fellow. He initiated distance learning courses in psychology at the University of Massachusetts

A Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, Professor Feldman received a B.A. with High Honors from Wesleyan University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award, and he has written more than 100 books, book chapters, and scientific articles. He has edited Development of Nonverbal Behavior in Children (Springer-Verlag), Applications of Nonverbal Behavioral Theory and Research (Erlbaum), and co-edited Fundamentals of Nonverbal Behavior (Cambridge University Press). He is also author of Child Development, Understanding Psychology, and P.O.W.E.R. Learning: Strategies for Success in College and Life. His books have been translated into a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. His research interests include honesty and deception in everyday life and the use of nonverbal behavior in impression management, and his research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research.

Professor Feldman loves music, is an enthusiastic pianist, and enjoys cooking and traveling. He has three children, and he and his wife, a psychologist, live in Amherst, Massachusetts, in a home overlooking the Holyoke mountain range.

Rented this book for the semester and am in love with the fact that I didn't have to buy it a full price and wonder what to do with it after my class ended. It was, however, an interesting book that could be great for referring to if you were going into this field of study. It was just a gen ed course for me, but I still loved the information it shared. Once the semester ended, I had enough time to return the book, which was very simple since Amazon provides you the return label. Definitely rent from Amazon! I can't believe I ever hesitated about it.

If your a student and your class requires you to get the 5th edition of this book, don't get the 5th ed. You will be fine with this edition. It is is pretty much the same thing. The chapters talk about the same thing, same pictures, and exact same words. The only difference i found was that they pretty much cut and pasted the sections within the chapter and put it in a different order, so page number is a little different. But all the sections are in the same chapter. Get this edition if your on a budget. Its the same book different cover. I mean $20 vs. $110?
