It is a love for justice.” hätte Robert F. Williams kaum leidenschaftlicher seine Bemühungen im Kampf für die Befreiung der African Americans ausdrücken können. Dieses Zitat spiegelt all die Gefühle und Hoffnungen derjenigen wider, die noch während der 50er Jahre vor allem in den südlichen Bundesstaaten der USA unter der ausgeprägten „Rassentrennung“ litten. Dort mussten Schwarze mit Einschüchterungen und Gewalt von Weißen rechnen, wenn sie sich gegen jegliche Form von Diskriminierung äußerten. Lokale Gesetzeshüter griffen nicht ein, da sie stattdessen Hand in Hand mit gewalttätigen Organisationen wie dem KKK zusammenarbeiteten. Doch nicht alle Afroamerikaner ließen sich von weißen Rassisten Angst machen. Einer von ihnen war Robert F. Williams, der sich öffentlich gegen Ungerechtigkeiten auflehnte und die Bewaffnung der Schwarzen zu ihrer eigenen Verteidigung predigte. Viele schenkten zwar seiner militanten Idee keine Beachtung, doch ihm selbst sollte sie später das Leben retten.
Robert F. Williams wurde zu einem Symbol einer jahrelangen Debatte unter Schwarzen über den Nutzen der Anwendung von Gewalt gegen Gewalt. Doch heute kennt kaum noch jemand die Geschichte des einst so gefürchteten Mannes der USA, der international für Schlagzeilen sorgte, als er sich für unterdrückte African Americans einsetzte. Williams entwickelte sich zu einem der dynamischsten Aufrührer des US-amerikanischen Südens. Er galt als ein “troubled intellectual”, “fiery prophet” und “courageous grassroots leader”, der ein neues schwarzes Selbstbewusstsein schuf.
Seine Entwicklung zu einem einflussreichen Aktivisten kam nicht von ungefähr. Robert Williams stammte aus dem südlichen Bundesstaat North Carolina, wo er bereits als Elfjähriger Zeuge einer brutalen Auseinandersetzung zwischen einer schwarzen Frau und dem weißen Polizisten Jesse Alexander Helmes wurde. Mit eigenen Augen sah er, wie der Polizist auf offener Straße die Frau brutal niederschlug und sie dann in ein nahe gelegenes Gefängnis schleppte. Weiße Schaulustige standen lachend daneben, während schwarze Männer beschämt wegsahen und hilflos die Szenerie verließen. Das Bild konnte Robert nie vergessen.
Noch bis zum Ende der 60er Jahre hatten Weiße in den USA allen Grund zu glauben, dass Angriffe auf African Americans zum Alltag gehörten und unbestraft blieben.
