About the Author
Amy Corwin is a member of Mystery Writers of America and a charter member of the Romance Writers of America. She has been writing since 2004 and recently left a career as an enterprise computer systems administrator to write full time. Her books include Regency historicals, paranormal romances, and mysteries. To be truthful, most of her books include a bit of murder and mayhem since she discovered that killing off at least one character is a highly effective way to make the remaining ones toe the plot line.

I'm not sure what to say about this book

This was a bit of a strange story but I'll have a go at describing the plot. The H is a duke who is chased after by every debutante in the ton. The author describes him having to check his carriage at night for debutantes trying to compromise him. When he gets home at night his servants have to check his room. I just found that it was a bit exaggerated. The h is a heiress with a passion to go to Egypt and take part in an expedition. The H doesn't believe that the h isn't chasing after him and they have a bit of a strange relationship. In the midst of this, one of the debutante's chasing the H gets murdered. The h is the H's alibi but she also wavers between thinking that he might be guilty of murdering the victim. Later another debutante is killed and left in his carriage and shortly after that the h is kidnapped and the H is blamed. The whole book is a bit complicated, a bit silly and not at all convincing. I love grand romances and this isn't one, especially since the h doubts the H right the way through the book and he is suspicious of all women. The dialogues between the H and h are strange and peculiar and not very romantic. You'd have to read the book to understand what I mean and I'm not sure the book is worth buying. On the up side it is a clean romance.

A wonderful romance

When I was a teenager, romance novels were all I read. I'm pretty sure I owned stock in Harlequin. My second favorite reads were murder mysteries. The Unwanted Heiress by Amy Corwin reminded me of how much fun a good romance can be, especially when combined with a murder and a scandalous scheme or two.
In Charlotte, Corwin provides us with a protagonist most of us have been, at one point or another. She has a great deal of moxy, but has been led to doubt herself due to repeated rejections. You have to admire her determination to achieve her dreams, regardless of society's opinions about their propriety. And in Regency England, holding on to one's unconventionality took some doing, especially if (insert irony here) you were a wealthy heiress who obviously couldn't be expected to actually have a functioning brain. Corwin does a beautiful job of pointing out the foibles of a patriarchal society that consistently underestimated female intelligence and ability and she manages to amuse and intrigue the reader every step along the way.
One of the reasons that I turned to other genres in my twenties was that Romances tend heavily toward the formulaic. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and Romance is not a bad genre because of it. However, after you've read several thousand (probably) of them, they do tend to get a bit predictable. Rather than stopping with the traditional theme of "true love conquers all," Corwin manages to turn this very predictability to her advantage as she makes a statement about the inherent dangers of uncritically accepting cultural stereotypes. And she does it with a light, often funny, always entertaining, touch.
For those who love Romance, and those who used to, The Unwanted Heiress is a must read.

Nathaniel, the Duke of Peckham is forever finding ladies in his bed,closet,study,and carriage. They look to entrap him into marriage. Charlotte is in sympathy with the Duke. Neither realize Charlotte is being followed by a highwayman. Charlotte is kidnapped. Murder, mayhem mishaps add to the mystery. The culprit is a surprise. Outstanding read while enjoying the patio , cool breeze and iced sweet tea.
