Wonderful first hand account of the Doolittle Raid

I am not sure how many different times this book has been published over the years and how many publishers have been involved but my first contact was via this Landmark version released in 1953 by Random House, Inc.
This is the story of the now famous raid, known as “The Doolittle Raid” which was conducted from the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet on 18 April 1942. While this first raid was not the most devastating attack on the Japanese mainland, it was the first and from a psychological and moral standpoint, it was a game changer in our war efforts.
Now I was extremely young when I first read this thing, or had it read to me in 1956 and the book was one of the over 170 books in the famous Landmark book series which were targeted to the reader between the ages of 10 and 15. Since I own (thanks to my mother’s foresight) most of the books in this series and since it has been years since I read all of them, I thought that I would give them a reread and see if they were as good as I remembered them. They are.
This one was written by Captain Ted W. Larson who was forced down (not enough gas to get back) on the coast of China and lost a leg in that crash. He pretty well captures the time, mood and thought process of those brave men and women fighting in that horrible war. Both my mother and father served in WWII as did many other relatives and family friends, so even as a very small child I was quite aware of that particular time in history.
Excellent work and as valid and good today as the day it was written.
