A tasty fiction profiterole: an escapist moment of sweetness and laughter

I love LOVE the character of India Black that Carol Carr created in her book series. I've gone out of my way to read every adventure for this Victorian-era London madam who becomes a British spy. The derring-do has plenty of derring and lots of "do," with storytelling twists I never predict... but mostly India is a smart and hysterically-funny character who makes me regret that she exists only in a fictional world.
In this short novella, India's partner spy, French, is sent to Paris to hand over a Russian agent (in exchange for one of their own). Even though she's not invited, India decides it's wise to go to Paris too... because really how could one not go shopping for pretty frocks once the spy-stuff is done? And, of course, things don't go precisely as planned. They never do, do they?
You could read this novella standalone; it doesn't depend overmuch on "factual" knowledge from other books in the series. But I do encourage you to start at the beginning because it's so thoroughly enjoyable, all the way through.
In any case: If you're looking for a break from the "real world" for an hour or two, and a reason to laugh... this is SO easy to recommend!

Short and sassy.

Well, I like this story but I feel a bit ripped off, with only 63 pages and a price of $2.99. Perhaps I'd feel more generous with stars if it had cost 99 cents, a more equitable price.
I've grown fond of this series' heroine, India Black, brothel madam now working with handsome British agent French for the British government in Victorian England. However, this story is just action/adventure with no time spent further developing the relationship between French and India, nor does it give us any more insights into India's past. (Well, it is only 63 pages. What can one expect?)
As for the plot, this has agent French going to France to effect a spy exchange. He takes a captured spy working for the Russians to exchange for a man captured by the Russians who has been spying for the British. When India gets wind of this and wants in on the action (and a trip to Paris for dining and shopping, of course), she is told in no uncertain terms by French that she is not to be included.
Of course, she goes ahead and surreptitiously follows him to France. Turns out French is exceedingly lucky she does so, considering all the misadventures on the way to the City of Light and the spy exchange. But that brings me to my other problem with this story: French doesn't come across as very competent this time around. I prefer him more macho, take-charge and efficient. He and India muddle through together on more or less equal footing in this short story or perhaps she even comes out ahead. Since he's the professional and she's a rank amateur, that shouldn't be the case.
However, a full-length novel is coming soon and an excerpt is included here. It looks to be more to my liking. February, 2014 India Black and the Gentleman Thief (A Madam of Espionage Mystery).

A fun but short stand-alone Madam of Espionage novella

Another fun (short) episode in the Madam of Espionage series. India is yet again a humorous narrator and madam-turned-spy with a knack of getting into trouble (a stinking mess to be more precise) and French returns as the gallant secret agent who also has a knack of getting into trouble! Fortunately together they make a pretty good team.
The novella seems to be a stand-alone story, not following the revelations at the end of book 3 and with no clue about chronological order in the series other than the mention of French' first name.
The disconnect with the book 3 cliffhanger was disappointing at first, but thankfully a book 4 excerpt (Chapter One) is included and picks up were we left off. Too bad Februari 2014 is still far away.....
